ATLANTA – Police said two people were shot dead in an apartment in southeast Atlanta on Friday afternoon while trying to stop a car burglary.
“Both victims did nothing wrong,” said Lieutenant Ralph Wolfolk. “They went outside, trying to interfere with some people who were trying to break into their car.
This happened shortly after 16:30 in the Auburn Glen apartments, located on Boulevard 49 SE.
Atlanta police said officers found two people with obvious gunshot wounds.
Both were rushed to hospital. Police said a 31-year-old man was in critical condition when he was transported and later died.
“Tonight we will have to stay in the family living room and inform a mother that their son has been lost in such a disgusting incident,” the lieutenant said.
The other victim was identified only as a 29-year-old woman.
The names of the man and the woman have not been announced yet.
“It’s definitely unfortunate and I definitely feel bad for this man’s family,” said Diamond Newchurch, who was visiting a friend at the complex. “Prayers are addressed to them for sure.”
Investigators said the man and woman were trying to stop at least two people who had been spotted breaking into cars.
Police said the suspects were last seen driving scooters through the garage.
“The information we were able to get was that there were people inside the car park. They were Bird Scooters traveling through the car park. They smashed several cars inside the car park,” said Lieutenant Woolfolk.
Anyone with information on the case has been asked to call the Atlanta Police Department.
